This is my summary of every chapter.

Chapter 1: Bilbo Baggins is a Hobbit. He is met by a wizard, Gandalf, who with Thorin Oakshield is leading an expedition to a dragon's cave. Bilbo also meets all the dwarves.

Chapter 2: Bilbo believes that the meeting was all just a dream so sleeps in the next morning, and is late for the start of the journey. After the Dwarves and Bilbo loose their food, they find 3 giants. The giants capture the dwarves, but then Gandalf reappears and saves all of them.

Chapter 3: The expedition reaches the Misty Mountains, and they have no food. They stop at Elrond, the elf's, home and replenish their supplies. Thorin's map has moon letters, which Elrond reads to them, and Elrond disaproves of the expeditions hopes.

Chapter 4: The group starts out walking again, and they find a cave for the night. They found the cave, but then the cave then opens up from the back and everyone, including the ponies, fall in. They meet the Great Goblin, who is rude, and Gandalf kills him with his magic.

Chapter 5: Bilbo wakes up in a cave, without the others, and finds a ring on the floor, which he keeps. He then sees that a pair of eyes are stairing at him, and he meets Gollum. Gollum tries to trap Bilbo, but with the help of the ring Bilbo gets out of Gollums cave.

Chapter 6: When Bilbo escapes he finds the rest of the expedition, and tells them what happens, leaving out the part about the ring. They then find an opening after walking all day, but they are trapped by wolves and run up trees. Then the Lord of the Eagles rescues the group and takes them farther.

Chapter 7: After the eagles land with the group the group sets off to find Beorn, a shape changer. Gandalf talks with Beorn and brings the dwarves in as pairs to get Beorn to help them. Beorn lends them ponies, and after the group passes over the river they send them back.

Chapter 8: As they are walking in the forest, Bilbo notices hundreds of pairs of eyes staring at them. They then reach a river, which is enchanted, and Bombur falls in. The wood elves then invite them to a feast, and Gandalf has dissapeared again.

Chapter 9: The wood elves then capture them, all except Bilbo who puts on the magic ring, and take them to their caves. Bilbo stays hidden for the next few days and figures out the basic floor plan of the confusing caves. Bilbo then unlocks everybody from their cells, and they try to escape.

Chapter 10: They are finally able to leave the forest, and they see the Lonely Mountains for the first time. Thorin introduces himself, and tells the groups tail, to the king of a nearby village, and the group is then welcome. They then stay in the town for about a week.

Chapter 11: They start heading toward Smaug, the dragon's, cave. They then find a secret passageway that leads inside to Smaug's cave. Bilbo is the one who then finds the door to the cave, thanks to the moon letters.

Chapter 12: Bilbo is the one who is volunteered to go and search Smaug's cave. When he sees Smaug's pile of treasure, he steals a cup, and then Smaug wakes up and scares Bilbo out of the cave. Bilbo then tells the others about the dragon.

Chapter 13: The dwarves, and hobbit, enter the cave and start to reclaim the treasures. Bilbo finds, and keeps, the Arkenstone, which Thorin is looking for. Thorin then tells the others that it is time to leave the cave and head home again.

Chapter 14: Smaug went to the laketown, which Bilbo and the dwarves had stayed at previously. The townspeople launched an attack on Smaug. Bard, a decendant of royalty, then attacked and killed Smaug.

Chapter 15: The expedition is brought word of Smaug's death. But the messenger also says that many other people are going to try to come up and claim the treasure as their own. Thorin sends a message to his cousin Dain who has an army who can help the expedition fight off anyone who wants their treasure.

Chapter 16: Thorin starts looking for the Arkenstone, which Bilbo sleeps with. Bilbo takes the first night watch position from Bombur and then leaves with the Arkenstone. Bilbo is then captured by the Elveking, and makes a deal with him to save his own life.

Chapter 17: Thorin is captured by the Elveking's army, but then Gandalf reveals himself as Thorin is making a fuss. Bard and Dain's armies then start to fight one another. Everyone is fighting as Bilbo sees eagles, but is then knocked out.
